Particle Therapy

Pyramid's products are used in several critical parts of commercial particle therapy systems. Particle therapy is fast emerging as a premier method of treating various cancers which are difficult or even impossible to treat by other methods. A dedicated particle accelerator, such as a cyclotron or synchrotron, accelerates ions such as protons or carbon nucleii to energies sufficient to penetrate the body. The particles are delivered to the patients in treatment stations using precision ion optics. The energy and spatial distribution of the particle beam at each station must be controlled to high accuracy, so that the tumor is irradiated while the dose to surrounding tissues is minimized. Because the majority of the energy deposition by a particle beam occurs in the Bragg peak at the end of range, the dose can be delivered to a tumor inside the body, but with much lower dose to the surface layers that can be achieved by conventional X-ray radiotherapy.

System Level Software

As part of its consulting services, PTC can assist in creating a fully integrated system, or an intelligent subsystem that can be combined with an existing high-level control architecture. Contact PTC to discuss your specific requirements.

Beam Scanning, Beam Scan Magnets, Magnetic Optics

Pencil-beam scanning (PBS) is a method of particle therapy which offers particularly precise control of the dose distribution. Pyramid has extensive experience with precision magnetic beam scanning, including high-speed scanning magnet design, low-noise field sensing, and complex waveform generation. Systems can incorporate multistrip beam sensors and other dose sensors to allow closed-loop feedback, providing precise 2-d dose distributions. (M10, H10, I-128 I3200, F100, “Scan Magnet”).

Beamline Design

As part of its consulting services, PTC can design entire beamline systems, including vacuum components, magnetic optics and mechanical structures. Contact PTC to discuss your specific requirements.

Beam Diagnostics, Ion Chambers

Pyramid supplies beam sensors, readout electronics, or integrated systems for beam diagnostics including multi-strip ion chambers, 2-d imaging arrays, quadrant detectors, and others. Sensor hardware can be customized for special applications.(see I128, I3200, I200, I404, I101, "IC", "BPM").

Accelerator Control Electronics

PTC provides a range of products that have been developed specifically for control of accelerator-based systems. The compact I/O devices include isolated power input and fiber-optic communications to minimize the effects of external electrical interference in high-noise environments, and therefore achieving a high level of dependability. Coupled with the A500 Real-Time Controller, I/O update rates in excess of 25 kHz can be achieved. (see M10 B10 A500).

Field Measurement

Accurate magnet control requires direct feedback of magnetic field. PTC has designed a fast, low-noise field probe for this purpose. The probe contains both a Hall field sensor and a fast pickup loop for transient measurement. (see H10 System).

Dose Control Electronics

The ability to control the radiation dose over the scanned field is a critical requirement in Pencil Beam Scanning. PTC supplies a range of high-precision low-current measurement electronics that are optimized for this purpose. These devices provide fast, low-noise measurement of currents in the range of picoAmperes to microamperes, and are available in 128, 32, 4 and single channel configurations. The devices contain integrated high-voltage supplies and various options for internal and external synchronization. A full dose control system will include a Real-Time Controller, beam sensor, readout electronics, scan generation, scanning magnets, all of which are available from PTC (see I-128 I3200 F3200 I404 IC101 F100).
